Melanie's Story

Many individuals served in this young adult program became homeless after aging out of the foster care system.  Melanie was one of those individuals. Melanie spent months on the street before staying at a shelter. She was vulnerable and had a significant history of abuse and addiction.  She moved out of the shelter and into her first apartment. The staff assisted her in applying for benefits and maintaining her housing.

Melanie had a child and eventually moved to another unit to accommodate her and her child. Months later, the state took temporary custody of her child. With the help of FrontLine program staff, Melanie completed her case plan and regained custody of her child. Staff assisted Melanie in obtaining employment and childcare; assisted her in managing her mental health symptoms; increased her coping and parenting skills, and educated her on family planning and maintaining her apartment. Melanie remains employed and has been housed for more than four years.
